Decisions.... #okavangolions #redlechwe #tsaropride
Elephants in the mist - visible against a backdrop that is highlighted by a slow-burning fire. #okavango #veldfire #elephants #landscape
Their deep hoots are a well known sound in the savannahs and their larger size means that they’re more likely to be seen when they roost in trees during the day. But Verreaux’s eagle owls are often confiding - content in knowing their wings will carry them away if one gets too close. It’s the wonderful bright pink flash of their eyelids that particularly endears them to me; like an eyeshadow that softens the face and distracts from the deadly talons that show the true predator within. #yearofthebird #verreauxseagleowl #owl #pinkeyelids #birdingbotswana #twitching
Quite devastated by China’s decision to reverse the ban on use of (farmed) tiger parts and rhino horn in traditional medicine. Ingesting tiger bones or rhino horn has no health benefits for people. It has however, very severe implications for the health of the remaining populations of these endangered species. Apart from the fact that selling ‘medicine’ that you know doesn’t work is deeply immoral, telling the difference between parts from animals that have been farmed and those that are poached in the wild is virtually impossible. We have seen the massive detrimental effects on elephant populations with the sale of supposedly strictly monitored ivory. With only 4000 wild tigers and 30 000 rhinos left in existence, this could be one of the most devastating environmental decisions ever taken. #worthmorealive #takeanasprin #wildlifetrade #rhinohornisnotmedicine #tigerbonesarenotmedicine
They say an elephant never forgets. They certainly don't seem to forget when a favourite food source becomes available. The Makalani palms (Hyphaene petersiana) that are great features of this northern Botswana landscape, produce copious amounts of fruit that generally ripen at the driest time of the year, when other food sources are at their poorest. It's not entirely uncommon to see elephants shaking each tree to check if the fruit has ripened and will fall. This bull has tested them all and will be back to check again, until they rain down on him. #thebeautyofelephants #realfanpalm #makalanipalm #wintersday #botswana #linyantiswamp #selindareserve
It looks like a snarl but is in fact a response to pheromones known as the flehmen response. This is seen in a number of mammals and most cats (including house cats), and allows them to check the reproductive or territorial status of others. Both males and females will bare their teeth like this when they come across a scent that will give them a chemical signal. This dominant male is testing the pheromones in the urine of a female who is coming into oestrus and, after sensing her readiness, will be following her very closely. #BigCats #Flehmen #ThisIsMyTrophy #FelineCanines
#nope
That’s still a no from her! #okavangolions #tsaropride #nottodayeither #bigcatsarenotpets
One of the little scraps that she’s been hunting for. She’ll move her den every few days so that the smell of lion doesn’t alert other predators to their presence. She has to leave her cubs alone while she hunts and they’re highly vulnerable, so regular moves are key. #okavangolions #lioncub #dubaplains
With water levels dropping in the Okavango Delta, hippos are becoming increasingly agitated about others’ proximity in their pools. It’s leading to numerous highly vocal and splashy altercations - which don’t always end with a show of force but may result in a quite devastating battle. #hippobattle #hippos #okavango #mine
She's a phenomenal hunter in perfect condition. Like all Okavango lions, her muscles are highly developed from running through water on a daily basis and she is bigger than most lions found in other areas. It is not possible to live in this wet environment without learning to incorporate the water into following prey species and being successful in hunting them. She currently has small cubs tucked away from the rest of the pride and is hunting on her own. @dereckjoubert and I have watched her stalking red lechwe in the deep swamps for hours. She doesn't stop until she is successful. With the very high numbers of lechwe around the island, she also doesn't need to hunt at night and indeed seems to be getting up later and later in the day - often hunting around mid-day. We used to stay with these lions from pre-dawn to film their hunts, but we're learning that right now, when the sun is rising, we too can rest with her. She's not going to move if she doesn't need to. #thisismytrophy#okavangolions #bigcats #dubaplains
Whenever we can, @dereckjoubert and I go and see some of the rhinos that have been moved to safe locations with #rhinoswithoutborders. We’re so close to our goal of moving 100 from poaching hotspots in South Africa to safe spaces in Botswana - and these translocated rhinos are doing phenomenally well in their new homes. This landscape will be welcoming them back as well. They’ll be really good for the palatable grass species as well as several types of dung beetles. As we see the landscape respond to having them back, it’s a reminder of just how much we stand to lose. To find out more about Rhinos Without Borders please visit greatplainsfoundation.com/rhinos. #rhinoconservation #rhinohornisnotmedicine #goodnewsconservation
A ferocious snarl and a formidable reminder that a lioness is not to be underestimated. The dominant Duba Plains male wants to mate with her but she's having none of it and is letting him know in no uncertain terms. It's a process that can go on for some time. #lioness #bigcatsarenotpets #snarl #Okavangolions #nottoday
Isn’t he magnificent? So I shot him repeatedly - with my camera. I’ll likely do so again tomorrow and many days after that because there is always the possibility of getting a better photograph of him. #thisismytrophy #worthmorealive #bigcats #causeanuproar
Just because the Okavango lions are used to getting their feet wet in the swamps doesn’t mean that they won’t avoid it if they possibly can. With the channels beginning to lower and dry, it can be possible - with a little effort, to keep those paws relatively dry. #thisismytrophy #okavangolions #bigcats #drypaws #leapinglion
It’s always good to get your weight off your feet isn’t it? #giraffe #relax #havingasitdown
It’s a tough time of year before the summer rains begin. Food is more limited - especially green, fresh, nutrient-filled vegetation. The elephants will soon feast on green grass but right now they’re digging for rhizomes and bulbs. #elephants #changingseasons #mindyourstep
Following the lionesses who have been hunting lechwe in the swamps of Duba Plains. There’s no way to avoid getting wet but he can make things easier for himself by sticking to a hippo trail which has cleared a path through the aquatic vegetation. #okavangolions #dubaplains #thisismytrophy #tsaropride #wetcat
Getting our scent on the wind. A young bull elephant kicks up dust as he follows females from the herd, but he stops to investigate us, trunk raised as if in greeting. #elephant #dubaplains #okavango #hello
Today is #worldanimalday - a day to celebrate the outstanding wildlife that occupies every possible niche in every environment on earth. It’s worth thinking about the fact that we are losing wildlife populations at an unbelievable rate. We are said to be in the sixth Extinction Event where wildlife is declining alarmingly as a result of our species’ activities. We are currently at a very important crossroads and the decisions that we make now will dictate how far those extinctions will go. A great deal rests on policies and legislation. If you don’t agree with what your politicians are doing, then tell them. We can still make a massive difference. #makeastand

Staring straight into the amber eyes of a lion will always awaken a part of me that knows instinctively that I am not the true predator here. And yet - people's amazing ability with tools and intelligence has made our species stronger by far and we are outcompeting every other predator on the planet. Lions are iconic - strong and proud and symbols of power throughout the
world. But there are now more statues of lions in the world than there are real lions. Only around 20 000 remain, scattered in ever-smaller patches of wilderness. It's worth noting this decline this #WorldLionDay but also noting that we have the ability to halt and reverse it when we put our minds to it. Nine years ago, together with @dereckjoubert, and National Geographic, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt the declineof big cats in the wild. The initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and global public-awareness campaigns. To date, this has supported more than 110 innovative projects in 28 countries that are helping big cats and communities thrive - all working to keep these wild eyes alight across Africa, ready to pierce our souls with the truth about who we really are. "A world without the distant roar of lions at dawn as the mists start to lift is too terrible to contemplate." A throwback National Geographic piece on imagining a world without these iconic, beautiful cats. Three eyes are better than two... Most lizards have what we call a parietal eye (or "third eye") on top of the head. It's a patch of cells that can detect changes in light and dark, and may play a role in lizard orientation. So much about the natural world to fascinate us! #lizards #reptiles #monitorlizards #herps
So many complex interactions - big and bold or quietly imperceptible - make up the vital ecosystems that surround us. And yet this precious biodiversity is being eradicated at a truly alarming rate, with grasslands and savannahs especially hard hit. Meanwhile, the world currently protects just 15% of land and only 7% of the oceans. A warning phrase from a biodiversity research study comes to mind: we need to stop "burning the library of life". #biodiversity #protectbiodiversity #habitatloss #conservation #nature #wildlife #endangered
Happy #WorldPhotographyDay! In @beverlyjoubert's words, a great image should tell a story and start a conversation. And in a world where non-human species are facing a barrage of new and escalating threats, a great image can also be a voice for the voiceless … and therefore an important awareness-raising conservation tool. #photography #conservation #wildlifephotography #endangeredspecies

Support a Ranger this Fathers Day ❤️ @greatplainsfoundation ・・・
Few conservationists have more passion than Poster Malongwa. Under his leadership, the #RhinosWithoutBorders team of wildlife monitors ensure that Botswana's wild rhinos have a chance at a future. For Poster, these horned creatures are like his children and he cares for them as though they were his own. But current restrictions on travel and tourism continue to put strain on the vital funding that keeps conservation initiates alive, putting the livelihoods of Poster and dedicated rangers just like him under threat.⁣
⁣
This Father's Day, please consider giving your dad a gift that can truly make a difference this year. Our #ProjectRanger initiative was created to provide much-needed support to rangers across Africa who face potential unemployment as a result of COVID-19. Without these men and women on the frontlines of conservation, wild species are at much greater risk. Let's protect the protectors.⁣

Although, the water levels in #Selinda are not as high as we've experienced in the past, it's wonderful to see the area relatively well drenched. We expect the waters of the spillway to reach the front of Selinda Explorers Camp in the next couple of weeks!

Delta dreaming ... if a trip to Botswana's Okavango isn't on your bucket list, it's time you added it. The largest inland delta in the world, the placid waters and lush indigenous forests of the Okavango offer a safe haven for innumerable bird and wildlife species.⁣

We've put together a special itinerary that starts off at Duba Plains in the heart of the famed wetland system before moving to @xigeralodge in Moremi Game Reserve. The trip ends at Selinda Explorers Camp – an intimate hideaway located on a remote stretch of the Selinda Spillway. It's the stuff safari dreams are made of.⁣

Today we celebrate fathers everywhere and the vital role they play in the family, but we're also paying special tribute to hard-working rangers and their loved ones who sacrifice so much to protect the world's wild species. Current travel restrictions have put huge strain on the livelihoods of many rangers who face a loss of income as tourism dollars dry up. An elephant’s trunk is a remarkable adaptation. It contains at least 40,000 muscles that give the animals both the dexterity to pluck individual leaves, and the strength to push down entire trees. Understandably, it can take baby ellies some time to master the use of their elongated appendages!⁣⁣

For lion cubs, EVERYTHING is a toy (even if mom is not so keen to participate)!⁣

Although, the water levels in #Selinda are not as high as we've experienced in the past, it's wonderful to see the area relatively well drenched. We expect the waters of the spillway to reach the front of Selinda Explorers Camp in the next couple of weeks!
#SelindaExplorersCamp #GreatPlainsConservation #GreatPlains #ConservationTourism #conservation #nature #Botswana #Okavango Delta dreaming ... if a trip to Botswana's Okavango isn't on your bucket list, it's time you added it. The largest inland delta in the world, the placid waters and lush indigenous forests of the Okavango offer a safe haven for innumerable bird and wildlife species.⁣
⁣
We've put together a special itinerary that starts off at Duba Plains in the heart of the famed wetland system before moving to @xigeralodge in Moremi Game Reserve. The trip ends at Selinda Explorers Camp – an intimate hideaway located on a remote stretch of the Selinda Spillway. It's the stuff safari dreams are made of.⁣

Conservationists have been warning for some time that giraffe populations are experiencing alarming declines due to poaching, habitat loss and a host of other threats. We’ve lost nearly 40% of the giraffe population in just the past few decades.
#WorldGiraffeDay is about raising awareness about their plight and the urgent need for improved protections. It’s up to us to ensure that future generations have the privilege of seeing one of Africa’s most iconic animals in the wild.

This #FathersDay, please consider donating to our #ProjectRanger emergency relief fund – an initiative that was set up to provide much-needed support to rangers working on the frontlines of conservation.⁣

Pangolins are remarkably shy creatures and spotting one in the wild is a rare treat. This scaly character was recently filmed near one of our camps. It fills us with joy knowing that the areas we protect provide safe havens for these unique animals.⁣
⁣
Across the globe, all eight pangolin species are severely threatened by poaching. Thankfully, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, pangolin scales were recently removed from China’s official list of traditional medicines – a watershed moment that moves us closer to shutting down the pangolin poaching industry. It’s a sliver of silver lining in these difficult times.⁣

Few conservationists have more passion than Poster Malongwa. Under his leadership the #RhinosWithoutBorders team of wildlife monitors ensure that Botswana's wild rhinos have a chance at a future. For Poster, these horned creatures are like his children and he cares for them as though they were his own. But current restrictions on travel and tourism continue to put strain on the vital funding that keeps conservation initiaves alive, putting the livelihoods of Poster and dedicated rangers just like him under threat.⁣

With Father's Day just around the corner, please consider giving your dad a gift that that can truly make a difference this year. Our #ProjectRanger initiative was created to provide much-needed support to rangers across Africa who face potential unemployment as a result of COVID-19. Without these men and women on the frontlines of conservation, wild species are at much greater risk. Let's protect the protectors.⁣
